about

Live at the Mulhouse Festival 2000 - Originally released on CD (Potlach).

John Butcher - saxophones
Xavies Charles - clarinet
Axel Dörner - trumpet

"The Contest of Pleasures documents the work of one of the most interesting and avant-gardist free improv trios of the turn of the century.
The chapel was the perfect setting for this kind of music. The three instruments blend together, often becoming impossible to identify. Slow drones succeed to delicate tongue work or key/piston clicks. It may sound unappealing in words, but to this listener's surprise this approach, when used by such skilled musicians, produces a captivating living organism. The absence of any electronics is another marvel, since some of the textures and sounds achieved land very close to contemporary electronic experimentations."allmusic: Francois Couture.

"There are moments where the grain of acoustic sound takes on the metallic colour one associates with the electronic, in the process redefining the idea of sonic modernity, disproving the idea that it can only be provided by new technology.
There are some moments where the polyphony of the instrumental play harks back to contemporary music or jazz.. Nevertheless, this disc illustrates acoustic instrumentation's capability for self-renewal, and its ability to create moment-to-moment uncertainty, the mystery of human breath becoming electronic."
Opprobrium: Nick Cain.
