" Superimpose is a duet of trombonist Matthias Müller and drummer Christian Marien from Germany. They have been working together for over fifteen years, which is a long time for improvisational ensembles. One of the main questions in this matter: how not to lose freshness when you know perfectly well your partner's playing style and way of thinking? Their new work, a triple album, is one way to try to find an answer with the help of guest musicians.
First - the British saxophonist John Butcher, one of the iconic figures of free improvisation and electroacoustics, comes into play. The Butcher - Mueller - Marien trio noticeably inherits the British school of free improvisation, the pioneers of which were guitarist Derek Bailey, saxophonist Evan Parker, trombonist Paul Rutherford and others. Butcher is younger and second generation, but he differs from many of his colleagues in the number and variety of international projects.
On the second disc, Müller and Marien are joined by the Swedish vocalist of Ethiopian origin Sofia Jernberg, known to many as a member of Fire! Orchestra by Mats Gustafsson. With it, Superimpose produces laconic and sometimes laconic music with less direct interaction - and more pauses that fill the musical space. Using the "small" drum sounds and the hiss of the trombone, Marien and Müller create a cozy atmosphere for the mostly quiet parts of Jernberg.
American trumpet player Nate Woolley, composer, improviser and editor-in-chief of Sound American, enters on the third disc and again changes the mood and at first seems to slow down the music Superimpose: Marien is engaged in creating long textures on the cymbals, Mueller is buzzing, Nate himself builds a part from point sounds of breathing different types."
