Original liner notes.
Most of my releases involve musicians I've played with for many years, often in regular groups that have evolved quite special musical identities. "Music on Seven Occasions" is a look at the other side of improvising - the brief encounter.
I'm still amazed how it's possible to meet some musicians for the first time and to just play together. Evan, as with Michael Zerang at the enterprising WNUR radio station, at 11 o'clock in the morning.
Duos are often where this kind of thing works best, and when Jon Morgan offered a "Meniscus" CD I decided to choose a few similar situations.

The American pieces are taken from some of the meetings I had on 1997 US tour, and are all first time encounters - although the Chicago musicians and I had played together once or twice in larger group contexts.
The previous year Thomas Lehn and I had our only duo outing to date - at "Mopomoso", London's longest running free improvisation club.
Veryan Weston and Alexander Frangenheim are both musicians I know well, but whom I usually only meet in more extended company.
In the interest of not working to too clean a theme, a few short solos have crept in.
