about

Common Objects:
Rhodri Davies - electric harp
John Butcher - saxophones and amplifier
Lee Patterson - amplified devices and processes

"The disc begins with a solo by Rhodri Davies, followed by one by John Butcher and a last by Lee Patterson.

The first and the last are based on continuous and linear sounds, on the calm and spatialization of sound. Davies like Patterson each have a unique sound, sometimes very abstract, sometimes close to instruments.
And as for Butcher, a new show of force with an always very rich improvisation, a unique language that is recognized among a thousand saxophonists, composed of unheard-of extensive techniques.

After these three beautiful presentations of each, we then arrive at a long improvisation of about thirty minutes in trio.
In general, this improvisation is rather linear and continuous, the three musicians play on long notes and long continuous sounds and they only change register very gradually. However, if this room seems calm and mellow at first, the more it goes, the more tension is present. Everyone's sounds become harder and harder and more abrasive and the piece ends in a series of massive and hard sound waves, dry and rough, of gentle violence and nervous calm. A violence that is done in restraint, as if Butcher was taking the lead, but Davies and Patterson were preventing him from going too far.
The tension and nervousness are palpable, you never really know what's going to happen, and the trio amazes with every wave of sounds. Because it must also be said, the collective sound of this trio is incredible and magnificent. The textures of each are mixed with a simplicity that contrasts with the violence of the individual interventions, all the sounds end up drowning in saturation and distortion even if we recognize the individual timbres very well."
